In November 2004, the life of Debbie Becker Matthie and her family changed forever. Debbie experienced life threatening complications after surgery which resulted in 6 weeks of intensive care at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.
"I am sure that I challenged everyone and all the technology in the Intensive Care Unit. Without these amazingly talented medical personnel and the best technology at their disposal, I would not be here today to watch my children grow. You have earned my most sincere respect and gratitude."
The Matthie family recently overcame another near-tragedy. Debbie's uncle suffered a severe heart attack and needed an emergency pace maker. Again, the Matthie family found themselves in the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre's Intensive Care Unit.
"The ICU staff and Doctor's have saved another life. They are truly Angels without wings. I am confident that if I should ever get that sick again, the best place for me is in the Red Deer Regional Hospital ICU."
As a reminder of the miracles that are performed everyday, the Matthie family presented the Red Deer Regional Hospital's ICU staff with a beautiful porcelain angel, displayed in a delicate glass box with the following message: You're never sure when you cross your path with an Angel. "The ICU Angel still sits at the nursing station to remind the staff how much they mean to me and all their patients. To enable patients like myself to have a healthy future, we must support this department in any way we can. Your family's lives depend on the best expertise and technology we can make available."
